LONG Completed milestones

UC3M has deployed a complex IPv6 network with Cisco, FreeBSD and Linux systems. The network has been used for the LONG project, and for other IST European projects such as GCAP or MOBY-DICK. This network includes both Ethernet and ATM transport technology. Several transition mechanisms have been tested: dual-stack, tunnels (configured tunnels, 6to4) and translation-based (NAT-PT, TRT). Exhaustive performance testing has also been made, to ease the identification of the most appropriate tool for each situation.

To execute performance tests, we have adapted an existing tool, MGEN, to the IPv6 protocol, including facilities such as diffserv marking or extension header generation (see the MGEN6 distribution). Diffserv QoS over IPv6 mechanisms have been tested. The ALTQ FreeBSD tool has been installed, in order to exercise the co-existance of EF, AF and best effort services.

The conclusion obtained is that, generally speaking, these services are ready for deployment, although the administrator should closely take into account packet size in the configuration of the service. Additionally, several network services such as multi-homing, multicast or mobility (in collaboration with MOBY-DICK) has been exercised, with some theoretical results

Regarding to application services, we have deployed several classical services over IPv6 such as Web, or IRC. In this latter case, and IPv4/IPv6 mixed scenarios has been installed using TRT translation among servers working with different protocols, in order to allow protocol transparent client operation.
